It has been a busy September and I am happy that I have finally managed to find a moment to update this webpage! Because this is my inaugural post and I have not had the pleasure yet to meet most of the parent body, I thought that I would begin by introducing myself and detailing some of my history.
My name is Emily Myhr and I was raised and attended school in the town of Claremont outside of Pickering. It was while attending Claremont Public School that I starred as Anne in a musical production of "Anne of Green Gables". This was a turning point for me, and because of this experience I threw myself into music and drama, taking piano and singing lessons, performing with community choirs and performing in many school concerts and musicals. Thanks to these educational opportunities, I decided to pursue a music eduction at university and went to Wilfrid Laurier to study for a BMus in voice performance.
After graduation I taught private singing lessons at the Beckett School in Kitchener, and group piano/early music skills in Waterloo. I also directed musical theatre camps for the Beckett School over several summers. Through these teaching experiences and my own experiences through school, I came to appreciate the incredible learning that the arts can provide. They not only inspire self confidence, poise, and determination, but support such curriculum related areas as literacy, oral communication and meta-cognition (self reflection).
Inspired by these conclusions and my work with young people, I enrolled at OISE and graduated with a BEd. Since graduation I have been teaching with the TDSB, most recently as a Grade 2/3 teacher at R.H. McGregor.
I am very lucky to be back teaching music and learning to develop programming for the elementary school. Over the next little while I hope to get the choirs up and running and start to make plans for the spring show. I am also lucky to have the opportunity to explore my other passion of children's literature though the library part of my job. I am excited to help support the school through the promotion of voluntary reading, media and computer literacy and research skills.
Please check this page for upcoming updates on both the library and music programmes.
Enjoy your October!
Sincerely,
Emily Myhr
